A Fun Way to Befriend Your Fear

It seems there is so much fear in the world these days. Sometimes I’m not sure if the fear I am feeling is all mine or part of the collective. I wake in fear each morning. I mentioned this to a friend lately, and she said she does too. So I wonder how many of us do, but are afraid to admit it? Luckily I have many processes to help me, to help me befriend my fear.

The other day I was lying on an acupuncture table, full of needles and pulsing electricity and I remembered a process I had done recently. I decided to revisit the word that had appeared in that process, which was “daredevil.” I went back into that word. Immediately I found myself as a rodeo clown in a ring, staring down a bull.

befriend your fear Samuel Zeller bullI thought, “This is not like me at all.” I stood my ground and connected with the bull. Then as I kept staring at it, I felt like the bull was my friend. He came up to me and I felt his loving presence. There is no danger at all. There is nothing to be afraid of.

I have heard the statement “from fear to love” and never really understood it. But now I see that with love there cannot be fear, and it came to me in a metaphor, with a deep felt sense.

So whenever I feel fear I can just imagine being with him, even talk to him, ask for help, and let the fear ease. It is so much easier for me to have that image and that feeling, than just some words. I feel like the bull supports me. This is really important in my current time of moving and transition.

So how can this help you? How do you face your fear? Could you find your own “bull” to help you through? If you do find one, you could have a conversation with it, or research it, to see what other lessons it might teach you. I looked up the bull in some Celtic cards I have and realized just how appropriate it was for him to connect with me.

Of course, there are times when fear is a friend of protection. Let your instincts and intuition guide you in those times. Here, I’m talking about that existential dread, that fight or flight, that sometimes overwhelms us, and often we don’t even know why.

Let me know if you have any experiences of befriending your fear. I’d love to hear from you.

  1. I really enjoyed reading this, and loved the image of the bull! When I’m afraid, I always think of what Don Juan (the Yaqui Indian shaman) advocated: that we need to be both sweet and ruthless. If we can learn how to act, we can be anything.
