Plant Communication and Roots

Have you ever thought about plant communication? Have you ever thought about roots? We know they anchor the plant and take up nutrients, but have you ever really looked at where some of them are? Plants and trees grow in all kinds of substrates and what seem like inhospitable conditions. They also communicate with each other.

On one of my walks the tenacity and exploratory nature of roots became really obvious to me. I could see the roots growing down the side of a bank and into the ground again. Trees grow on the sides of rocks and mountains as well.  Is that not amazing?  Why would they choose to grow there – a seed lands and it just starts to grow, with enough sun and water.  It is not thinking – “Oh boy this is a really dangerous place to grow.”  And it can grow to quite an age in these places.

Root Tenacity

There are all kinds of plant life with all kinds of roots for varying conditions and locations. And these roots also are a key part of a communication system with other plants.  They are talking to each other. Scientists are now discovering that the fungus in the soil is one of the communication and nutrient delivery systems. Forests and other plant communities are just that – communities.

On a spiritual level, we can talk to these plants and their communities. We can also communicate with nature beings such as devas and elementals, who live with the plants and help take care of these communities.

If we imagine we can communicate with plants and nature beings, how different would our life be? What insights might we discover? Would we feel less lonely and separate? Would we realize we are connected with the planet, that we are interbeings and co-creators with all of Mother Nature? If we were rooted in the ground and spreading our “branches” to the sky, would we feel different – more secure, more at peace, more powerful? Why not imagine this – take a tree stance and feel it. Lean against a tree and feel its support. Meditate and connect.

What do you think?  Have you had experiences communicating with plants or their communities?  Maybe it has been on a subtle level – feeling peace in their presence, appreciating their beauty, encouraging them to grow, or feeling sad at their demise. Communication is not always about words.

I’d love to hear from you.
